Reinventing Fairs

The trade fair as cultural, urban, and relational infrastructure.
Trade fairs are venues for exchange, connection, and presence—spaces where companies, people, products, knowledge, and visions converge within a single, shared, and unique physical experience.
Today, the value of a trade fair extends beyond mere exhibition and commerce. Its strength lies in the ability to create meaning, focus attention, foster relationships, and transform a visit into a memorable experience. Reinventing trade fairs means starting with space as a strategic lever. Space becomes a tool for listening, attracting, guiding, welcoming, and engaging—a platform capable of shaping the culture of a sector and enhancing the event's perceived value.
A living system
Every trade fair is a complex ecosystem. It involves exhibitors, visitors, buyers, industry professionals, institutions, brands, designers, students, the media, and professional communities.
Designing this ecosystem means creating an urban lever for the experience: a system of pathways, plazas, pause points, attractions, and meeting places capable of guiding flows, fostering connections, and transforming into an instant city.
Our approach
Lombardini22 has thoroughly analyzed the evolution of the trade fair sector and developed a new approach to designing exhibitions: moving beyond mere display venues to create platforms for experiences, culture, and networking—capable of generating value before, during, and after the event. This method stems from a specific question: how can space enhance the value of a trade fair?
LISTENING
Every project begins by understanding the stakeholders. Needs, behaviors, challenges, and opportunities become the raw material for the design.
ATTRACTING
Space directs attention. Circulation paths, plazas, content, and focal points generate interest, encourage longer stays, and boost visibility.
GUIDING
An effective trade fair is intuitive to navigate. Visitors find their way through clear reference points, logical sequences, and coherent wayfinding systems.
WELCOMING
Comfort, accessibility, break spots, quiet zones, and crowd management all influence the quality of the visit and the visitors' willingness to engage with the experience.
ENGAGING
Talks, exhibitions, installations, cultural content, and sensory experiences transform the fair into a storytelling medium, capable of amplifying the value of the brands and the industry it represents.

Meetings and insights
Reinventing Fairs is also an open field of research.

Neuroscience Driven
The layout redesign project for the EuroCucina/FTK (Technology For the Kitchen) and Salone Internazionale del Bagno (International Bathroom Exhibition) at Salone del Mobile 2024 incorporated a neuroscience-based experimental process to study the relationship between people and space.

Workshop Reinventing Fairs

DI OGNUNO is a project developed in collaboration with Village for All (V4A) and HospitalityRiva that involved creating an experiential stand to promote more inclusive design in hospitality spaces. It is a multi-year initiative that began in 2024.
Compasso D'oro
The project developed for Euroluce 2023—*The City of Lights*—at the Salone del Mobile received an Honorable Mention at the 29th ADI Compasso d’Oro Awards in 2026. Read more.
How do you reinvent a trade fair?
Workshops and collaborative design
The working method involves listening and co-designing with trade fair authorities, organizers, companies, industry associations, and sector stakeholders. These interactions serve to identify real needs, build scenarios, define priorities, and transform the complexity of the trade fair into a clear spatial strategy.
