GAS Galleria Alberto Sordi

The intervention rethinks entrances, shopfronts, building systems, and lighting within the historic Art Nouveau gallery, enhancing its 10,000 sqm surface and its role as a major urban crossroads, while restoring spatial clarity and continuous public accessibility.

Located at the intersection of Rome’s main historic arteries, the gallery reconnects the city through a continuous public path linking Piazza Colonna to the Trevi Fountain. The removal of the glass entrance doors eliminates the barrier between street and interior, encouraging a natural and fluid passage. Retail units were consolidated and reduced from 27 to 15, with new vertical connections and a complete reorganization of building systems.
Internal and external shopfronts were replaced with full-height glazed elements, minimal profiles, and lighter bases, improving legibility and visibility without interfering with the building’s historic value. The dimmable, dynamic lighting design adapts to different times of day and weather conditions, reshaping the atmosphere of the gallery, vestibules, and porticoes, while enhancing the mosaic flooring and the large central skylight.
The project successfully balances commercial function, heritage preservation, and public use, delivering an elegant, accessible space capable of welcoming citizens, visitors, and commercial activities alike.
The removal of entrance barriers, the consolidation of retail spaces, and the dynamic lighting system transform Galleria Alberto Sordi into a true “urban living room”: a continuous and harmonious route where Art Nouveau heritage and contemporary retail engage in dialogue, offering Rome a vibrant and identity-defining place.
